Improving Transit Network Design and Operations Using Analytical Modeling and Mobility Sensing Data

Dr. Saidi will discuss how data-driven and analytical approaches can improve the planning, operation, and management of public transit systems. The talk will cover the use of smart card fare collection data and land-use information to infer passenger trip purposes and activity patterns, including non-work travel such as educational, recreational, commercial, and health-related activities. The seminar will also examine changes in travel behavior before and after COVID-19, illustrating the value of passive mobility data in understanding responses to disruption. In addition, Dr. Saidi will present a mesoscopic train-following model for analyzing rail operations and delay propagation, as well as a two-stage framework for the expansion and redesign of bi-modal express transit networks. Together, these contributions demonstrate how mobility sensing data, operational modeling, and optimization can support better decision-making for public transportation authorities and cities.

About the speaker

Dr. Saeid Saidi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary. Prior to joining the University of Calgary, he was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society at MIT and a member of the MIT Transit Lab.

His research focuses on transportation network modeling, public transportation planning and operations, big data analytics using mobility sensing data, and system dynamics modeling. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications and serves as Vice Chair of CUTRIC’s Academic Committee for Transit Innovation. He also served for nine years as a member of the Transportation Research Board’s Rail Transit Systems Committee.

The seminar is open to researchers, academics, students, professionals, and practitioners interested in Intelligent Transportation Systems, public transit operations, mobility data analytics, and transport network design.

Participants will have the opportunity to take part in the discussion following the presentation and learn more about the activities of the IEEE ITSS France Chapter.
