Short Description

IEEE-ITSS logo with a Sri Lanka flag.

We are thrilled to announce the establishment of the first IEEE Student Branch Chapter of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) in Sri Lanka. This pioneering initiative is set to revolutionize the nation’s transportation infrastructure by fostering advancements in intelligent, efficient, and sustainable systems. Our chapter’s primary goal is to drive innovation and promote the integration of cutting-edge technologies into national transportation networks, thereby addressing current challenges and paving the way for future developments.

The chapter will be inaugurated under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Uthayasanker Thayasivam, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. We are excited to welcome students from multiple disciplines to participate in interdisciplinary sessions, enriching the collaborative spirit of our efforts. This chapter’s inception marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s academic and technological landscape, aligning with the rich history of the global ITSS, which was officially founded as the Intelligent Transportation Systems Council on January 1, 1999.

Chapter Activities

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) encompass many technologies to enhance transportation networks’ efficiency, safety, and sustainability. These systems integrate information and communication technologies with transportation infrastructure and vehicles to improve traffic management, reduce congestion, and provide real-time information to travelers. In Sri Lanka, applications of ITS can be particularly transformative. For instance, implementing smart traffic signals can help alleviate congestion in urban areas, while real-time public transport tracking systems can enhance the reliability and convenience of buses and trains. Additionally, using predictive analytics for traffic flow and accident prevention can significantly improve road safety. By leveraging these technologies, Sri Lanka can make substantial progress towards a more intelligent and efficient transportation system, ultimately benefiting the economy and the quality of life for its citizens.
The vision of ITSS is to be the major volunteer-led international community and networking platform that facilitates the interchange, discussion, and progress of scientific research and innovations in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems for the benefit of humanity. ITSS aims to attract and engage scientists, engineers, practitioners, students, and policymakers worldwide. As a student chapter in the developing nation of Sri Lanka, we are committed to working towards this vision. We welcome volunteers to join us in various activities, including awareness sessions, hackathons, brainstorming competitions, and research projects. Additionally, we will host webinars and panel discussions featuring distinguished resource persons from around the globe, facilitating invaluable knowledge transfer and international collaboration. Together, we can significantly transform Sri Lanka’s transportation landscape and set new benchmarks for excellence in the field.
