The IEEE ITS Society’s Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Program is aimed at promoting the research areas of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Society in conjunction with its Technical Committees. The Distinguished Lecturer mechanism is sponsored by ITSS and is particularly useful for ITSS Chapters that do not regularly have the opportunity to invite international speakers or to travel to conferences. Distinguished Lecturers may be requested by organizers of IEEE ITSS conferences, workshops, or IEEE ITSS Chapters (including student branch chapters). Other groups interested in building relationships with ITSS are also welcome to make requests for DLs.

Distinguished Lecturer Program

Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) connects Senior IEEE ITSS members, who are renowned intelligent transportation experts, with ITSS Chapters so they can share their knowledge, expertise, and insights into the future of ITS technology. The DLP is aimed at promoting the research areas of the IEEE ITS Society as identified by its Technical Committees.

IEEE ITSS DL Program Nomination Process

The IEEE ITS Society’s would establish an approved list of Distinguish Lecturers (DLs) managed through the IEEE ITSS Education website. The expectation is that an IEEE ITSS DL would be a long standing ITSS member, have a past record of ITSS activity (e.g., conferences, administration, publications), and be able to promote ITSS activities at the lectures. An open call for DLs would be announced and managed through a portal on the website. A nomination package would include providing a CV, a biosketch (suitable for posting on the web), a link to a webpage, and abstracts of at least one talk that they would be willing to give as an ITSS DL (a video link to a presentation is also acceptable). Each nomination package would be evaluated by the IEEE ITSS Education Committee. As part of the evaluation, various criteria would be considered, including stature of nominee (with a focus on “rising stars”), geographical region, and a balance of underrepresented groups.

Once approved, an ITSS DL would serve for a term of two (2) years, which may be renewed once. After serving two consecutive terms, an individual should sit out at least two years before being considered as a DL again.

Requesting Distinguished Lecturers

The procedure for requesting an ITSS DL should be initiated at least three months prior to the event. The requestor is encouraged to identify up to 1-3 potential DLs by preference. An up-to-date list of ITSS DLs will be maintained on the IEEE ITSS Education website. A requestor should complete a DL Request Form, also located IEEE ITSS Education website.

Once a DL Request Form is submitted, the ITSS Educational Committee will consider the request, and may seek more information. After a request has been approved, the requesting organization will be notified along with the requested DL. It will then be up to the two parties to coordinate the event — speaking date, travel arrangements, etc.

Once the arrangements are finalized, the requestor must confirm the event by submitting an Approved DL Form, also located IEEE ITSS Education website. Finally, the requesting organization/chapter must submit a Distinguished Lecture Report within 30 days of the event.

Financial Support for Distinguished Lecturer Visits

The total cost of a Distinguished Lecturer’s dedicated travel will be supported up to $3,000 based upon IEEE ITSS Reimbursement Procedures for Travel and other Expenses. Note that this reimbursement is made directly to the lecturer for their travel. It is a goal of ITSS to support as many chapters as possible so priority will be given to requests that have not received prior funding for activities.
