The IEEE UK and Ireland Section ITSS Chapter was formally established on 1 August 2024. To celebrate this special occasion, our newly formed Chapter hosted the Inaugural Event on 23 January 2025 at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK. Organised by Prof Valentina Donzella and Dr Milan Lovric, the event included the following presentations and activities:
- Introducing the IEEE UK and Ireland Section (Prof Paul Cunningham, IEEE UK and Ireland Section Chair);
- Introducing the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) (Dr Fernando García Fernandez, Univ. Carlos III de Madrid, Member of the ITSS Board of Governors);
- Introducing the University of Limerick IEEE ITSS Student Branch Chapter (Dr Reenu Mohandas, Student Branch ITSS Chapter Chair);
- Contribution of IEEE ITSS UK & Ireland to the YP and WIE Affinity Groups (Dr Nagham Saeed, University of West London, IEEE UK and Ireland Section Vice Chair, UK and Ireland Wi-ITS Representative);
- 1st Technical Talk: “Smart road infrastructure for intelligent urban mobility: a Distributed Acoustic Sensors approach” (Dr Mona Jaber, Queen Mary University of London, IEEE UK and Ireland ITSS Chapter Secretary, IEEE UK and Ireland Section Secretary);
- 2nd Technical Talk: “The robustness of bird’s eye view algorithms in vehicle automation” (Dr Ciarán Eising, University of Limerick, IEEE UK and Ireland ITSS Chapter Treasurer);
- 3rd Technical Talk: “Decarbonisation of road freight” (Prof David Cebon, University of Cambridge, 2022 ITSS Presidential Prize Winner);
- Sim4CAMSens Project Workshop (Mike Dempsey, Dr Alan Walker, Prof Valentina Donzella, Dr Milan Lovric, Dr Imran Mohamed, Matt Daley, Dr Elliot London, Dr Kashif Siddiq, Gunwant Dhadyalla);
- Industry-Meets-Academia Workshop;
- Closing Ceremony and certificates of appreciation;
- WMG Facilities Tour (WMG Perception Sensors Testing Lab and WMG Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory).
The Inaugural Event was attended by 35 participants (18 IEEE members, 17 non-members). It was not only a celebration of the Chapter formation but also an opportunity to foster collaboration between academics and industry professionals, and plant seeds for many exciting future projects.
