ITSS Distinguished Lecture Series: Stochastic Modelling of Risk and Perceived Safety for Automated Driving
Date: 15th April 2025 | Time: 17:00 PM CET • Speaker: Prof. Meng Wang
Join us, Tuesday, 15th of April, 2025, at 17:00 PM CET for an exciting virtual talk by Prof. Meng Wang on the topic “Stochastic Modelling of Risk and Perceived Safety for Automated Driving“.
This talk is part of the ITSS Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS), organized by the ITSS Germany Chapter and technically co-sponsored by TU Dresden.
Abstract:
Quantifying objective risk and user-perceived safety of vehicle automation is crucial in advancing the deployment of automated vehicles, especially when interacting with other road users. In this lecture, we reflect on the concept of risk and introduce computational models that capture the objective risk and the user-perceived safety of automated vehicles in the presence of high-speed vehicle-vehicle interactions. While these models have different applications, they share the same root and reveal the two-dimensional nature of driving risk and the importance of manoeuvre uncertainties in the resulting risk level. Hard-braking and merging events are used to illustrate the predictive power of the models. The lecture concludes with open questions in this research line.
Biosketch:
Prof. Meng Wang received his PhD from TU Delft in 2014. He worked as a PostDoc Researcher (2014-2015) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, TU Delft, and as an Assistant Professor (2015-2021) at the Department of Transport and Planning, TU Delft. Since 2021, he has been a Full Professor and Head of the Chair of Traffic Process Automation, “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, TU Dresden. His main research interests are traffic flow modelling and simulation, control design and impact assessment of connected and automated vehicle systems. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of the TRB Standing Committee on Vehicle Highway Automation. His research has been supported by the European Commission, German Research Foundation, German Ministry of Transport and Digitals, and Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
