IEEE ITSS 25th Anniversary

Becoming a member of IEEE ITSS means joining thousands of engineers, enthusiasts, educators, learners, leaders, and collaborators around the globe to advance intelligent transportation technologies for the betterment of humanity. As an organization, we share expertise, learn, and collaborate in an effort to solve today’s transportation challenges, using advanced technologies to improve mobility, safety and the environment.

History Of IEEE-ITSS

For some engineers, 1999 New Year’s Day activities include celebrating the birth of a new entity dedicated to studying intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The Technical Activities Board (TAB) of the 320,000-member Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) voted to transform the TAB Ad Hoc Committee on ITS into a permanent entity, the new Intelligent Transportation Systems Council (ITS Council), which begins activities January 1, 1999.

Milestones

  • 1993: IEEE TAB approved ITS Committee

  • 1998: IEEETAB approved the formation of the IEEE ITS Council (ITSC) with 17 IEEE Societies as sponsoring members

  • 1999: ITS Council. Founding President: Umit Ozguner

  • 2000: IEEE Trans on ITS appeared

  • 2005: ITS Council became the IEEE ITS Society.  President: Charles J. Herget
